Regulations Relating to the EBOMFS - Assessment

1. Only candidates who, after review of their CVs, have been shown to be recognized specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and who have been recognized for more than 2 years at the time of the RQ Assessment in any of the full member countries of the UEMS can enter the Assessment.

2. The Assessment shall be in two parts: an Assessment of the Curriculum vitae (CV) and Logbook, i.e. the candidate's record of the operations she/he has performed personally since attaining recognition; and a second part comprising the Multiple Choice Question exam (MCQ) and the Oral examination.

3. Assessment of the CV/Logbook (standard form) will be made by the Scientific Committee in collaboration with the Executive Committee of EBOMFS at least 3 months prior to the date of the MCQ and Oral examination..

4. The Assessment will be balanced to allow non-academic surgeons to pass without academically important criteria, and vice versa. Thus the academic criteria will have a maximum of 25 marks, and the clinical activity a maximum of 25 marks, totalling 50 marks altogether. Only those candidates who score at least 36 marks may continue with the MCQ and the Oral examination. The total marks of the MCQ and Oral examination together shall be worth a maximum of 50 marks. The total maximum of the Assessment shall be worth a maximum of 100 marks.

Academic Criteria:

The Assessment will be conducted under the following broad headings:

a) Academic or second university thesis or research degree

b) Publications in recognized national and international journals

c) Presentations at national or international meetings

d) Attendance at conferences and courses recognized for CME.

These four activities are considered a measure of academic activity.

MCQ and Oral examination:

1. The MCQ Exam will be conducted before the Oral examination. The assessment of MCQ will be proportional, i.e. the final points given are in relation to correct answers. The MCQ shall be worth a maximum of 20 marks. If a candidate does not take part in the MCQ exam, she/he cannot continue the Assessment.

2 . EBOMFS reserves the right to analyze statistically MCQ results and to omit MCQ if it/ they is/ are non-selective.

3. The Oral examination shall be worth a maximum of 30 marks. The total marks of the MCQ and Oral examinations together shall be worth a maximum of 50 marks.

4. The Oral examination, which will be by interview only, will last 1 hour. Only a quarter of an hour will be provided for the presentation of the clinical case.

5. There will be three examiners for each candidate. The President of the jury should come from the same country as the candidate. The other two examiners should be from other countries.

6 . The examiners will ask questions using one of the following languanges: English French, German, Spanish. Excepti onally, if the candidate cannot cope with any of these four languages, she/ he should contact the Secretary General for further proposals.

7. Questions used are approved by the scientific committee of EBOMFS.

8. Candidates must bring presentations of three of their own patient cases, at least one of which shall be discussed. It is up to the examiners to choose one out of the three the candidate has prepared for the Assessment. If a candidate has not prepared clinical case presentations for the Oral examination, she/he cannot continue the Assessment. The duration of the case presentation is limited to 15 minutes, which includes the discussion.

9. The jury will grade the candidate on a 30-mark scale.
